The present analysis of flexicurity dimensions across EU countries draws upon available data sources from Eurostat (Statistics on Living and Income Conditions and Labour Force Survey) and OECD. Flexicurity attempts to conciliate both employers' and workers' needs, flexibility and security, by ensuring the worker safe transitions inside the labour market, while maintaining and improving competitiveness of the companies and also preserving the European social model. eu, sysselsÄttnings strategin och flexlcurity 413 ningsmetoden består i att: fastställa riktlinjer för unionen i kombination med bestämda tidsplaner, när så är lämpligt och i jämförelse med de världsledande EU-toppmötet tog ett bra steg för ökad jämställdhet. JF - EU & arbetsrätt. SN - 1402-3008. IS - 3. Flexicurity is an attempt to unite these two fundamental needs. Flexicurity promotes a combination of flexible labor markets and a high level of employment and income security and it is thus seen to be the answer to the EU's dilemma of how to maintain and improve competitiveness whilst preserving the European social model.

Presented by DG Employment and Social Affairs (ESA) of the European Commission as a new EU regulatory choice, 1 'flexicurity' seeks to combine flexibility in labour markets, work organisation and labour relations with employment and income security (Viebrock and Clasen, 2009;. Flexicurity aims at ensuring that EU citizens can enjoy a high level of employment security, i.e.

However, the European flexicurity initiatives seem never to have had much impact in Denmark and the Netherlands. There are few accounts of the recent adjustment to the flexicurity models, be it at the EU or at national levels. The re‐emergence of the flexicurity concept at the EU level shows that also after the crisis more or less compre-hensive ideas on balancing labor market flexibility and security are part of the toolkit. In this respect flexicurity has managed to survive the crisis.

Thus, the flexicurity concept was relatively vague. This vagueness was one of the reasons of its success. Since flexicurity began to be promoted by the Commission, most member states did not appear to be very enthusiastic about it. Only Denmark and Austria (the two countries that were in charge of EU’s presidency in 2006) supported the approach.

Flexicurity remains an important part of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the flagship agenda for new skills and jobs, and is seen as an alternative for one-sided liberalisation tendencies.

In the mid‐2000s, the flexicurity concept was developed into a key EU policy concept.

Flexicurity. Flexicurity refers to a form of work organisation making it easier for companies to restructure or make redundancies, in return for high levels of social protection from the state. It was pioneered in the Nordic countries (especially Denmark), and widely advocated as a response to the economic crisis.

The re‐emergence of the flexicurity concept at the EU level shows that also after the crisis more or less compre-hensive ideas on balancing labor market flexibility and security are part of the toolkit.
